Train with Young Kids at Home

It can be quite challenging to train with young kids at home. While I am writing this, we have a 3 year old son and we have a new born daughter of just one week old. Though the situation with children this young can be joyful and very much rewarding, time and the opportunity to exercise might be challenging or at least it needs some adjustment.

Limit Intensity When Needed

One of the important aspects to keep in mind is that especially with very young kids, your sleep is affected. You are less likely to have the amount of sleep you truly need. And as I wrote earlier: Sleep is the most Underestimated Training Aspect. In that sense it is important to realize that this is not the time to push hard and have challenging training sessions, especially with newborns who might keep you up all night.

Be Flexible

With young children at home your schedule cannot be too rigid. A lot of things will happen and interfere with what you had planned or were used to. Therefore it is not the best time to have goals or exercise routines that require long training sessions. I am not a proponent of long exercise sessions to start with (see also No Need for Hours in the Gym).

It is best to have a basis that you want to do in order to maintain a certain level of strength and fitness. This should not take you more than 15 to 20 minutes and whatever you can do on top of that is a bonus. On top of it, it will be challenging to have your training sessions on set times. That is because there is a new chief of your schedule 😉.

The best way to make the most of your time, is to train at home. It prevents time to commute. Time to wait for machines or weights to become available. Also you will have a better chance to have a brief session when you get the opportunity. This is why I am a big fan of the kettlebell (see also Advantages of Kettlebells) and training at home (5 Benefits of Training at Home). You will make sure you keep a baseline of strength and fitness. Especially if time and opportunity is very limited to go to a gym.
